One hundred and seventy-five years after the Communist Manifesto, resurgent populists on the left and right around the globe are calling for controlled innovation, heightened trade barriers, repressive taxation, and other policies that would centralize control of the economy. Cato senior fellow Johan Norberg’s vigorous response is out: The Capitalist Manifesto: Why the Global Free Market Will Save the World. Norberg, a Swede and former skeptic of capitalism, is setting the record straight on free markets—the most powerful anti-poverty force known in history—and he’s not letting capitalism’s opponents define the term for the next generations.

Join Norberg on Wednesday, September 20, to discuss his new book and efforts to convince skeptics about the power of free markets.

The market, a system based on cooperation and exchange, still offers the best way to address and think about current issues, including the rise of China, the role of Big Tech, and inequality. Norberg’s book has been praised by publications such as The Economist for its sterling application of timeless economic principles.

The Capitalist Manifesto has sparked new engagement with free-market skeptics, including those on the right such as Chris Griswold, policy director at the conservative think tank American Compass. Norberg will contend with Griswold at an event on September 25 at Cato headquarters.
