The U.S. Supreme Court has made it clear that the First Amendment guarantees individuals the right to speak about politics and politicians without limit. But what if several individuals pool their resources to advocate for or against candidates for public office? Should their speech be limited and regulated by the government?

According to federal campaign finance laws, the answer is yes. But a new federal lawsuit on behalf of Speech​Now​.org, a group of citizens formed to protect the First Amendment at the ballot box, challenges those laws as a violation of the rights to free speech and association. The case aims to pave the way for independent groups of citizens to make their voices heard in elections, free of burdensome campaign finance regulation.
