Brandan P. Buck

Research Fellow

Brandan P. Buck is a research fellow in foreign policy studies at the Cato Institute. He is a historian of domestic opposition to U.S. foreign policy in the 20th century, postwar conservatism, and the national security state. His research concerns the impact of an activist foreign policy on American society and civil liberties, the history of U.S. strategic thinking and its implications for contemporary politics, and the politics of foreign policy.

Buck’s work has appeared in scholarly journals and popular outlets, including the International History Review, Responsible Statecraft, The American Conservative, Reason, Strategy Bridge, anti​war​.com, and the Libertarian Institute.

Buck holds a PhD in history from George Mason University and a B.A. in history from the University of Denver. Previously, Buck worked as an intelligence and geospatial analyst with the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency. He served in the U.S. Army and Virginia Army National Guard and completed multiple tours of duty in Afghanistan as an infantryman and intelligence professional.
