The U.S. announced Thursday it will provide another round of security assistance to Ukraine including weapons and equipment totaling around $500 million. But, as Doug Bandow, a Senior Fellow at the Cato Institute, notes in an article in The American Conservative, more support won’t fix what Ukraine needs most: manpower. He also provides the inconsistent arguments the U.S. uses to justify the continuing war.

Bandow also commented recently on how President-elect Donald Trump can avoid furthering the U.S. involvement after he takes office, including:

  • Staying out of the ongoing conflict and taking NATO membership off the table.
  • Shifting the burden of Europe’s defense, not share it.
  • Stop treating the Pentagon as a welfare agency.
  • Engage in serious though discreet negotiations with Russia over a settlement, and
  • Allow Ukraine to choose its own course.
