In a recent op-ed for USA Today, Dr. Jeffrey A. Singer and Josh Bloom argue that the CDC’s flawed opioid guidelines are causing needless pain and suffering for millions of Americans. They highlight the plight of “pain refugees,” individuals who can no longer access the pain relief they need due to restrictive prescribing practices influenced by these guidelines.

Dr. Singer, a surgeon and senior fellow at the Cato Institute, notes, “Not a month goes by without one or both of us receiving emails from desperate people pleading for help finding a physician willing to take new pain patients—a task that has become next to impossible.” He calls for a reevaluation of the CDC’s role in pain management, especially as Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. takes office. With his upcoming book, “Your Body, Your Health Care,” set to be released on April 8th, Dr. Singer aims to advocate for patient autonomy and compassionate care.

This op-ed presents a timely opportunity to discuss the urgent need for reform in pain management practices. Dr. Singer is available for interviews to provide insights into this critical issue and the solutions he proposes.
