Washington, D.C. – The Cato Institute announces that Thomas J. Sargent, a Nobel Prize-winning economist and Professor of Economics at New York University (NYU), will join the Institute as a Visiting Scholar with the Center for Monetary & Financial Alternatives, effective August 1, 2024. Dr. Sargent will focus on groundbreaking research at the intersection of fiscal and monetary policy, furthering Cato’s mission to advance public policies based on individual liberty, limited government, free markets, and peace.

Dr. Sargent’s distinguished career includes significant contributions to the field of economics, particularly in the areas of macroeconomic theory, monetary economics, and time series econometrics. He was awarded the Nobel Prize in Economic Sciences in 2011 for his empirical research on cause and effect in the macroeconomy. His work has profoundly influenced the understanding of economic policy and its impacts on economies worldwide.
