Washington, D.C. – The Cato Institute welcomes Adam Michel as the new director of tax policy studies.

Michel will provide context, insight, and policy recommendations as Congress navigates the looming fiscal policy challenges in the coming years—including the expiration of the 2017 tax cuts. His research will also highlight the distortionary effects of cronyism in the tax code and the tax consequences of persistent deficit spending, including the threat of new taxes, such as those on wealth.

“We’re thrilled to announce that Adam Michel joined Cato,” said Alex Nowrasteh, Cato’s director of economic and social policy studies. “Adam brings a deep understanding of tax economics and policy to Cato shortly before Congress considers major reforms to fiscal and tax policy. Taxes affect all Americans and Adam’s work will have an impact that will be felt in every paycheck in the United States.”

Before joining Cato, Michel served as deputy staff director at the U.S. Congress Joint Economic Committee, where he helped lead Senator Mike Lee’s (R‑UT) Social Capital Project, organized congressional hearings, and produced research on a wide array of current economic topics. He has also worked as a senior policy analyst at the Heritage Foundation and as the program manager for the Spending and Budget Initiative at the Mercatus Center at George Mason University. He received his Ph.D. in economics from George Mason University and a BA in politics from Whitman College.

Adam Michel has appeared on CNBC, CNN, Fox News, and more. He is also published and quoted in the Wall Street Journal, New York Times, and Washington Post.

He begins his work immediately and is available for interviews.
