In a recent statement, David Inserra, Fellow for Free Expression and Technology, commented on Meta’s announcement of significant changes to its content moderation policies. “By ending the fact-checking system and introducing a Community Notes approach, Meta is taking a bold step towards enhancing free expression online,” he noted.
He highlighted the scaling back of policies that suppress speech on major social issues, emphasizing that “this gives users a greater voice to discuss and debate various issues.” Inserra also acknowledged Meta’s commitment to user personalization of feeds and their partnership with the U.S. government to combat growing censorship abroad.” These steps should be cheered as a private company taking practical actions to increase the expression of its 3 billion users,” he concluded.
