The federal budget problem is a health care problem. Federal spending on health care subsidies exceeds spending on Social Security and national defense, is the only category of programmatic spending growing faster than the economy, and is the main force driving the US government toward a debt crisis. The Department of Government Efficiency effort can make both government and health care more efficient by advocating—within the executive branch and before Congress—dramatic cuts in federal health care subsidies. The question is not whether it can or should but when Congress will cut federal health spending. A mountain of evidence shows Congress can cut federal health care subsidies dramatically while improving health care and without harming overall health. The longer Congress waits, the worse the dislocation will be.
